‘Sir Bobby Robson Way’ opened at Esh Plaza, Newcastle Great Park

Football legend, Sir Bobby Robson, will today be further immortalised as he opens a new road named in his honour.

At an event this afternoon Sir Bobby, accompanied by the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Newcastle, Councillor David Wood and Mrs Margaret Wood, will unveil one of the new road signs and drive through a red banner to open a section of the new road.

Sir Bobby Robson Way’ is part of the road network at Newcastle Great Park and links the brand new commercial development of Esh Plaza with the main thoroughfare leading to the A1 trunk road.

The opening of the road also marks the completion and handover of the first building at the North East’s premier new business park which has been pre-let to the joint management team of three NHS organisations, Newcastle Primary Care Trust (PCT), Northumberland Care Trust and North Tyneside PCT.  Newcastle Great Park is already home to the global headquarters of software developer, Sage.

Michael Hogan, Director of Esh Space, said;
‘We are delighted that both Sir Bobby and Newcastle City Council have agreed to name the road ‘Sir Bobby Robson Way’.  It is unique in the City to name a road in someone’s lifetime has required special approval from the Council.’

Cllr Anita Lower, Executive Member for Community Safety & Regulation at Newcastle City Council, said:
‘It is absolutely fitting that Sir Bobby should be honoured in this way; he is an inspiration to people through out the North East and far beyond.  We believe it is entirely appropriate that his name should be associated with a project of the quality and stature of Newcastle Great Park.’

Commenting, Sir Bobby Robson said:
‘I am both flattered and overwhelmed by today – I fully appreciate the honour bestowed on me.  I wish everyone well who uses the road – please make sure you always drive along it with courtesy and care!’
