The works comprised the construction of a new eight classroom, two storey extension together with associated external works, drainage and work to mains services.

The site was located in an area of mine workings which required grouting prior to the main works commencing.

Foundations were concrete strip founds to support concrete block inner walls with facing brick outer walls and concrete pads supporting a structural steel frame.

The extension was linked to the school by a ground and first floor link corridor. The ground and upper floors were precast concrete units topped with screed, under floor heating was incorporated within the screed. Roofing to the extension was Kalzip standing seam sheeting with the link corridor roof being finished with Sarnafil single ply membrane.

Windows were manufactured by Velfac and incorporated a Passivent natural ventilation system for temperature regulation to the classrooms.  Access to the upper floor was by a structural steel and stainless steel finished staircase. Internal partitions were created in a metal stud partitioning system. Finishes included suspended ceilings, carpet finish to all class rooms and corridors and decoration.

The works were carried out during school hours and the site and approach road were segregated from school pupils by metal fencing panels.  Work within the school to link the Mechanical and Electrical services was carried out during half term holiday.  External works comprised hard paving around the extension, with existing school playing field made good.
